24/25 AUDITION DETAILS: In the Next Room or the vibrator play 

Announcing auditions for Gnarly Bard Theater Company’s production In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play), by Sarah Ruhl, directed by Nicole Marie Wilder. 

 

About In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play): 

Set in the 1880s at the dawn of the age of electricity in a seemingly perfect, well-to-do Victorian home, proper gentleman and scientist Dr. Givings has innocently invented an extraordinary new device for treating "hysteria" in women (and occasionally men): the vibrator. Adjacent to the doctor's laboratory, his young and energetic wife Catherine tries to tend to their newborn daughter-and wonders exactly what is going on in the next room. When a new "hysterical" patient, Sabrina, and her husband bring a wet nurse and their own complicated relationship into the doctor's home, Dr. and Mrs. Givings must examine the nature of their own marriage, and what it truly means to love someone.

***If ticket demand calls for it, an additional performance may be added for Saturday October 26th at 2pm.

Rehearsal Dates:

September 9 - October 17, 2024

Monday - Thursday Nights (6:30-9:30) 

 

Cast:
7 actors, non-AEA. Scripted as 3M, 4W. Actors will be asked to portray the gender listing in the script. Casting is gender-flexible. Queer, trans, and non-binary actors are encouraged to audition. 

 

$500 stipend paid

 

Characters:

• Dr. Givings, a man in his forties, a specialist in gynecological and hysterical disorders.

• Catherine Givings, his wife, a woman in her late twenties. Full of life, but sexually frustrated with her marriage.

• Sabrina Daldry, his patient, a woman in her early thirties. A pianist. Struggling with “hysteria” and infertility.

• Annie, a woman in her late thirties, Dr. Giving’s midwife assistant. Capable.

• Leo Irving, Dr. Giving’s other patient, an Englishman in his twenties or thirties. An artist.

• Elizabeth, an African-American woman in her early thirties. A wet-nurse by default. She has suffered a terrible loss (the death of her infant son).

• Mr. Daldry, Sabrina Daldry’s husband, a man in his forties or fifties.

Primary: Thurs. May 16th 2024, 6:00pm-10:00pm & Sat. May 18th 2024, 10:00am - 2:00pm

Callbacks: Wed. May 22, 6:00pm-10:00pm

Audition Details:

Note that you will be asked to upload a headshot (any recent photo is fine) & resume (or list of shows you’ve done and parts you’ve played, or shows you’d like to do and parts you’d like to play if you haven’t done much or any theater).

You will receive a copy of the form with your responses as confirmation of your submission. Our audition coordinator will be in touch only if we are missing anything or a file will not open. Submissions are open until 11:59pm Sun., May 12th. Once the submission date is closed, you will be contacted with your audition time. Called back actors will be contacted by the morning of Mon., May 20, 2024.

We do not provide housing for actors; all performers must be located near enough to Saint Cloud and able to arrange transportation to and from rehearsals and performances.
